Does your face look older than others your age? Then maybe you should check your blood sugar levels. A recent study found that high blood sugar levels in the blood causes a person’s face to look older than their actual age.
A joint study between Leiden University Medical Centre and Unilever R & D found a relationship between blood sugar levels in humans and facial age. People aged 50-70 years old with high sugar content will look older than those with lower blood levels.
The study involved 600 men and women aged 50-70 years in the Netherlands. Researchers concluded that in every 1mmol/liter increase in blood sugar levels, a person’s face will look five months older.
Diana van Heemst, Associate Professor at Leiden University Medical Center said, “The study shows the importance of controlling blood sugar levels for the health of people in middle-aged and elderly. It seems that anti aging might be a motivation for people to change their lifestyles to become healthier around the age of 50-70 years old. ”
David Gunn, a senior scientist at Unilever R & D laboratories at Colworth Science Park said, “This is the first study to prove a link between blood sugar levels and facial age. Research has shown high levels of blood is not good for health. But this study proves, blood sugar also makes people look young. ”
The study, published in AGE states that further research is needed to determine the actual cause.
